Is Back Pain Interfering With Your Everyday Life?

The chances are very good that you’ll experience back pain at some point in your life. Whether it develops after lifting something heavy, spending long hours sitting at a desk, or from repetitive daily movements, back pain can quickly disrupt your routine and keep you from doing the things you enjoy.

At Expert Physio Plus, our multidisciplinary team works together to uncover the source of your pain and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs. Physiotherapy, acupuncture, massage therapy, and other services can all play a role in helping you move better and feel better.

To see how this process works, let’s look at Daniel’s story (not his real name) and how he found relief from debilitating back pain.

Meet Daniel

Daniel was a computer programmer in his late 30s who spent most of his workday seated at a desk. Outside of work, he enjoyed playing board games with friends, taking his German shepherd to the dog park, and cooking meals with his girlfriend.

One afternoon, while digging out a dead shrub in his backyard, Daniel felt a sudden spasm followed by a sharp pain in his lower back. He assumed the discomfort would fade after a day or two—but it didn’t.

The pain soon began affecting nearly every part of his life. Walking his dog became difficult, yard work was out of the question, and even sitting at his desk became distracting and uncomfortable.

What We Discovered During His Assessment

His symptoms began while twisting and lifting a heavy clump of dirt during yard work.
Movement screening and strength testing helped identify mobility limitations and pain patterns.
His clinician determined he likely developed acute low back pain related to irritation of the lumbar discs.
Long hours of sitting had left his back deconditioned, making the sudden physical demands of yard work too much too soon.

Daniel’s story highlights a common issue: our bodies often struggle when we jump from prolonged sitting to strenuous activity without adequate preparation. Fortunately, identifying the root cause is the first step toward lasting relief.

An Integrated Treatment Approach

Daniel’s treatment plan focused on more than simply reducing his pain. Our goal was to address the underlying injury, improve his physical resilience, and help reduce the risk of future episodes of back pain.

A Customized Plan for Recovery

Based on Daniel’s assessment findings, our multidisciplinary team developed a personalized treatment strategy designed to relieve symptoms, restore function, and address the lifestyle factors that contributed to his injury.

By combining multiple treatment approaches, we were able to help Daniel recover more comfortably while building a stronger foundation for long-term back health.

Daniel’s Recovery Plan Included:

1
Relieve acute pain. Acupuncture, soft tissue massage, and chiropractic care provided natural options to help reduce pain and improve comfort.
2
Restore mobility and build strength. A therapeutic exercise program focused on strengthening his back and core muscles to better support his spine and improve overall function.
3
Address lifestyle factors. Because prolonged sitting contributed to his injury, our team recommended regular movement breaks, stretching throughout the day, and ergonomic changes such as a standing desk.
4
Prevent future injuries. After his symptoms resolved, Daniel worked with a personal trainer to develop a fitness routine that would help keep his back strong and healthy long term.
Every person’s back pain story is different. By combining hands-on care, targeted exercise, lifestyle modifications, and ongoing support, our team can help you return to the activities that matter most while reducing your risk of future injury.

Don’t Let Yard Work Be a Pain!

Yard work is a great way to stay active, spend time outdoors, and tackle projects around your home. However, jumping into strenuous outdoor tasks without preparation can increase your risk of strains, sprains, and back injuries.

At Expert Physio Plus, we want to help you stay safe while enjoying your time in the garden. A little planning and body awareness can go a long way toward preventing pain and injury.

Three Simple Ways to Protect Your Back and Body

Our clinicians often recommend these simple strategies before taking on gardening, landscaping, or other outdoor chores:

1
Warm Up First
Prepare your body before starting physically demanding tasks. Dynamic stretches or a few minutes of light walking can help get your muscles ready for work.
2
Switch Things Up
Avoid spending long periods doing the same repetitive task. Alternate activities or take regular breaks to reduce strain on your muscles and joints.
3
Be Mindful of Your Movements
Repeated bending, twisting, and awkward positions can increase fatigue and injury risk. Adjust your position or change tasks when your body starts feeling strained.

Have Questions? We’re Here to Help

The last thing you want is an injury keeping you from the activities you enjoy. If you’re dealing with back pain or want personalized guidance for staying active safely, our multidisciplinary team can help.

Standing Lumbar Self Traction

Help relieve tension and create gentle decompression through the lower back with this simple exercise that can be performed at home using a sturdy counter or bench.

Stand in front of a sturdy counter or bench positioned around waist height. Place your hands firmly on the surface and slowly bend your knees while leaning your weight into your arms. Allow your hips to gently drop downward, creating a comfortable stretch and decompression through your lower back. Hold the position as instructed, then slowly return to standing.

“Mina and his team are exceptional! Since 2008, I’ve seen countless physiotherapists for my lower back pain, but none could identify the root cause. Mina, however, pinpointed the problem in just one session and set me on the path to recovery. I now schedule monthly maintenance sessions, and I’m so grateful for this incredible team!”

Why Hitting the Beach Is More than Just Fun in the Sun

Planning a beach trip this summer? Beyond the sunshine and relaxation, the beach offers plenty of opportunities to stay active and support your overall health. Here are a few simple ways to turn your beach day into a fitness opportunity.

🚶

Walk on the Sand

Walking is already a great form of exercise, but sand adds an extra challenge. The uneven surface creates resistance that can help strengthen the muscles in your legs while improving balance and stability.

🌊

Splash in the Waves

Even if swimming isn’t on your agenda, spending time moving through the water can provide a great workout. Water creates natural resistance, causing your muscles to work harder during simple movements.

☀️

Relax and Recharge

Time spent outdoors can help reduce stress and promote overall well-being. Take a few moments to enjoy the sights, sounds, and fresh ocean air while practicing deep breathing and mindfulness.
