Physiotherapy Can Help You Resolve Unwanted Knee Pain

Do you experience knee pain or swelling that affects your ability to squat or climb stairs? Does your knee catch or lock up, making it difficult to perform daily tasks that once seemed simple? At Expert Physio Plus, our physiotherapists can help you find relief and get you moving again!

Knee pain can be debilitating, making walking, running, and moving difficult. It may even hinder your ability to do more sedentary activities like watching a movie or taking a long car ride.

Often, this pain leads to avoiding activity, but this strategy does not help in the long run. Inactivity often leads to more dysfunction and disability. Fortunately, our physiotherapists have extensive training in the body’s musculoskeletal system, including the knee. If your symptoms are severe or last more than a few weeks, your first step should be to contact our team! At Expert Physio Plus, we can help get you moving once again by relieving your pain and enhancing your body’s natural healing process. Call today to schedule an appointment.

What Are The Most Common Knee Injuries?

Your knee is one of the largest joints in your body, made up of a complex system of bones, tendons, and ligaments. Knee injuries can result from direct contact or a sudden movement that strains the knee. When no specific event is connected to the damage, the pain might result from aging, injury, or repeated stress on the knee. The location of your pain helps determine which structures are involved and can help ensure proper treatment. Here are some of the most common causes of knee pain:

Arthritis

The most common type of arthritis for knee pain is osteoarthritis (OA). This condition occurs when the cartilage surrounding your joints deteriorates, and the joint no longer has a sufficient cushion between the bone. This leads to joint inflammation with varying levels of pain and dysfunction.

Meniscus Injuries

The meniscus serves as a shock absorber and helps maintain stability in the knee. A meniscus tear can be caused by harsh contact or activity when the knee twists suddenly. Some tears are the result of wear and tear.

Ligament Injuries

Our bones are connected by ligaments. The ligaments in your knee act like leather straps to hold the bones together and keep your knee stable. Ligaments are often stretched or torn during a sudden motion. The important ligaments in the knee include:

  1. Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL): The ACL is located in the center of the knee and controls rotation and forward movement of the shin bone.
  2. Posterior Cruciate Ligament (PCL): The PCL is located in the back of the knee and controls the backward movement of the shin bone.
  3. Medial Collateral Ligament (MCL): The MCL is on the inside of your knee and provides stability to sideway motions.
  4. Lateral Collateral Ligament (LCL):  The LCL is on the outside of your knee and provides stability to the sideways motions.

Tendonitis

Your tendons are thick connective tissues that attach muscles to bones. Tendonitis occurs when the tendon becomes inflamed due to repetitive movements. It is common with jumping and landing motions and sports like skiing, cycling, or hurdling.

How Physiotherapy Can Help Your Knee Pain

Regardless of the cause, knee pain can make it hard to walk, rise from a chair, climb stairs, or play sports. Our physiotherapists will work with you to help ease your pain and get you back to doing what you love!

Physiotherapy for knee pain involves a thorough assessment of your entire lower extremity, including your hip, knee, and foot. Our team will examine your knee for signs of misalignment or structural damage and assess your stance, gait, and functional movements like squats and steps. Your therapist will prescribe the right treatments, such as manual therapy or therapeutic exercise, to help decrease your knee pain and improve overall mobility. Ultimately, we will provide you with a supervised, progressive program designed to address your specific symptoms. Our programs aim to reduce pain and restore function through range-of-motion, strength training, proprioception, and neuromuscular control activities.

Struggling with Knee Pain or Immobility? Try a Custom Knee Brace!

Knee pain can dramatically impact your quality of life. Whether it stems from osteoarthritis or a severe injury, discomfort and restricted mobility can make it challenging to participate in daily life.

One technique we offer at Expert Physio Plus is a custom knee brace. Unlike an off-the-shelf brace, a custom device is fitted to your anatomy for maximum comfort and effectiveness. A custom knee brace provides more support and stability, making it easier for you to move and reducing your injury risk.

Who Benefits from a Custom Knee Brace?

We generally recommend custom knee braces in two circumstances:

  • You’ve suffered a ligament injury. A knee brace helps stabilize any looseness in your knee joint, protecting your knee as you work through rehabilitation.
  • You have knee osteoarthritis. A knee brace helps remove pressure from the knee joint, reducing pain. This will make it easier for you to become more active (which will further help with pain).

Do either of these circumstances apply to you? Then set up an initial appointment at Expert Physio Plus! Our physiotherapists will guide you through the entire process, including assessing your needs, fitting the brace, and ensuring you’re using it correctly.
